Plumas County is located in northeastern California, where the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges converge providing unparalleled beauty and solitude. It is known for its high alpine lakes and thousands of miles of clear-running streams. More than three quarters of Plumas County’s 2,618 square miles is national forest land. It boasts more than 100 lakes, 1,000 miles of rivers and streams, and over a million acres of national forest.

With a population of about 23,000, there are only about eight people per square mile. This makes Plumas County a perfect place for the outdoor enthusiast.

Recreational opportunities are available in every season. Some 292 miles of trails are maintained throughout the forest, including the Pacific Crest Trail. In addition to the abundance of hiking trails, there is camping, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, boating and wild life viewing. In the winter there is snowshoeing and cross country skiing.The area also caters to visitors and homeowners with several restaurants, including fine dining.

Plumas County is a place to rest, reflect and get away from it all.

A former lumber mill, Graeagle features a quaint array of similar red buildings that house shops and services. The Graeagle Mill Pond is a popular swimming and picnicking site during the summer. Gold Mountain is an environmentally sensitive, golf and recreation community of 401 custom homesites spread over more than 1280 forested acres. The development is a one hour beautiful drive from Truckee and one hour to Reno and the Reno Airport. It is located at 5000 feet in the breathtaking California Sierra. In 1924, Frank Lloyd Wright originally designed the clubhouse for the Nakoma Golf Club located in one of the first planned suburbs of the United States, near Madison, Wisconsin. The challenging golf course at Gold Mountain is aptly named the "Dragon."

Welcome to Portola	Bridge into Town

The town of Portola, California, sits along both sides of the middle fork of the Feather River and is the only incorporated city in Plumas County. It is part of the Feather River drainage, which flows westward down the Feather River Canyon. It has transitioned over the years from a stage stop for early Gold Rush pioneers to an essential rail yard for the former Western Pacific Railroad, to a modern community with all the amenities.

Sierra Valley, east of Portola, is an Audubon Society nationally designated Important Bird Area. This 130,000 acre valley, the largest in the Sierra Nevada, is home to over 260 bird species alone.  Sierra Valley is a broad, open valley in Northern California with a mix of seasonally flooded sagebrush flats, agricultural fields, and wetlands formed by the headwaters of the Feather River. Sierra Valley is surrounded by mountains ranging in elevation from 6 to 8,000 feet.
